Caumsett is a Fall Haven

Bike, Jog or Wander

October 29, 2014
Are you looking for a great place to view the fall scenery while getting in some exercise?  Caumsett State Park is just the place. Located at 25 Lloyd Harbor Rd, Huntington, NY 11743, the view is pristine!!!  You get gorgeous view of Lloyd Harbor as you drive in and once there it feels like a step back to a much more glamorous time!  This past weekend was gorgeous at Caumsett.

In 1921 Caumsett was purchased by Marshall Field III and was named after the Matinicock name which means place by a sharp rock. The estate was planned like a traditional English estate complete with a huge winter cottage, a mansion, dairy barn, garage and stable.  The stable is in use and you can see horses as you wander the property.

There are many paths stemming from one large 3 mile loop that is great for bikes, strollers, and jogging.  The mansion is a mile and a half from the entrance and marks the half way point of the path.  If you stop by the mansion you get a great view of the sound and there is a tremendous hill that is a ton of fun to run uncontrollably down with your giggly children.  There is a path at the bottom that goes by the water if you are feeling adventurous.  Along the path are some "obstacles" as my son likes to call them. It is part of the exercise course where you can work on balance and strength as you walk.

This is a haven for many species of bird including osprey, and you will see many people with binoculars that love to bird watch.  There is a HUGE osprey nest in the chimney where you are able to see the birds.  We saw at least six deer while there and my Favorite spot to visit is under a HUGE tree (it's actually three trees that have grown into one.)  The branches meet the ground and the kids LOVE it!

Caumsett is great any time of year but Fall is gorgeous with the trees popping color and the sound in the background.  It costs 8 dollars per car to park and the park closes at sunset.  Call 631-423- 1770 Enjoy the day!
