Huntington Harbor Lighthouse

Lighting the Way for Over 100 years!

October 23, 2014
Huntington Light House has been guiding boats in our waters for over 100 years.  It replaced Lloyd Harbor Light House as one of the most important Light houses as industry boomed.  Due to seawater, the main structure was deteriorating to a point that in 1985, the Coast Guard was going to tear it down and replace it with a steel light house.  That is when the Huntington Lighthouse Historical Society made it their mission to preserve it and educate the public about this gem in our local history.

I was fortunate to accompany by son's Boy Scout troop on a gorgeous Saturday on  short boat ride right out of Huntington Harbor to the Huntington Lighthouse.  We pulled up to the dock, disembarked and my dreams of living in a light house in solitude (mommy retreat)  grew even stronger.  We were led up the entryway to a ladder, and brought into the living quarters  where Deanna schooled us on the inner workings of the light house.  We learned amazing tidbits of information about the lifestyle of a keeper and the construction of the house!  We were able to climb a skinny ladder to the light and see the new solar powered light the Coast Guard Maintains. (This is the only part they maintain, the light house itself is maintained through volunteer work and donations! )

The views were incredible.  You could see LLoyd Harbor and on a clear day, they said you can see Connecticut.  The boys were ecstatic when they got to ring the bell and learn about how the rainwater collected in the cistern for the keeper to use.  I highly recommend this as an interesting way to spend an afternoon. Be warned that there are no grounds as the light house is surrounded by HUGE boulders called rip rap.

To continue to care for the Light House,  there are two major events that help keep the lighthouse.  The next one is the boat parade on Friday, November 28, 2014, where boats are decorated and parade the harbor.  Their music festival is held in September.  In addition, boat tours are held June to September. There are also many volunteer opportunities for teens and adults alike. Please visit: http://huntingtonlighthouse.org/teens-on-the-water.php for more information!
